REPORTS + STUDIES

Our Future 35 is more than a transportation project; it is a comprehensive program to address growth challenges and forge a new future with community benefits that celebrate and connect all Austinites.

  • This technical study, completed in Spring 2022, evaluated the engineering feasibility of new cap and stitch structures over the freeway. The study indicates that many open space and park features are indeed feasible on new freeway caps and that one or two-story buildings may be feasible in some locations on freeway cap structures. The findings from this report will be folded into the Cap and Stitch Design and Engineering process. (Click here to access this report.)

  • Currently underway, a multi-disciplinary design and engineering team is assisting the City in developing a community-supported concept for the design of new caps and stitches over I-35. Once Austin residents assist us in identifying desired outcomes and preferred design features, the design team will develop preliminary (30%) engineering designs for the new caps and stitches.

  • This effort kicked off at the end of 2022, and will work with community stakeholders to develop an action plan to ensure that new freeway caps and stitches provide benefits to surrounding neighborhoods, specifically affordable housing, anti-displacement, community development needs, small business support and incubation, and workforce development.

  • This effort will identify funding options for the construction and ongoing maintenance and operations of new caps and stitches.

  • Submitted in October 2022 for a United States Department of Transportation Reconnecting Communities Planning Grant, this proposed study will (if awarded) identify multimodal transportation improvements needed to provide equitable mobility options to, from, and between new freeway caps and the neighborhoods surrounding I-35.
