  • TxDOT's highway reconstruction and Mobility35 Program are focused on the physical design of the roadway (think travel speeds, tunneling travel lanes below ground, lane additions, etc.)

    Our Future 35 is leveraging the opportunity presented by TxDOT's construction to create caps and stitches on already established infrastructure to more equitably stitch together everyday destinations like healthcare facilities, schools, and jobs more equitably. While the two projects will be synchronized, Our Future 35 will not address the roadway elements included in TxDOT's scope.

  • TxDOT is currently developing concept alternatives for widening and sinking I-35 through central Austin, which will determine where caps and stitches above the freeway may be possible. The locations will be finalized as a result of TxDOT's Environmental Study, set to wrap up by Summer 2023. At that time, the TxDOT Environmental Impact Statement will identify a "preferred alternative" that will move forward to the design and construction process and cap and stitch locations will be finalized.

  • The previous scoping working group focused on responding and commenting on TxDOT's NEPA scope for the highway. Now, the City of Austin has committed funding to develop design concepts for "caps" and "stitches" on top of the lowered freeway via the Our Future 35 program.   • A cap is a large deck that spans over 300 feet in length over a highway to accommodate programming such as structure or greenspace. Caps are also referred to as decks, land bridges, or lids. The specific use of each cap location will be determined through community engagement efforts and coordination with TxDOT.

  • A stitch is a platform spanning less than 300 feet in length over a highway, connecting local mobility networks. The Our Future 35 project is considering multiple stitches across I-35. These stitches would include, at minimum, travel lanes for cars and protected paths for bicycles and pedestrians. Additional enhancements may include landscaping, shading, art and multi-modal enhancements.
